Hi Angela,
Thank you for your comment. This was such a disappointing article to read in an established paper like The Australian. I totally agree with you – I don’t understand the need for male hate. Not all men have bad intentions, although I acknowledge that there have been a few high profile cases that have created distrust. I was glad to see that the overall response has been to support male obstetricians and gynaecologists.

With any job you’ll get a bad egg now and again, but to lump them all together is just offensive and insulting. I mean, what’s next? Female nurses and doctors choose their job so they can see and touch naked men? So they can see men in pain? I wish this whole male-hate theme was over and done with! Thanks for a good article.

Hello fellow Miko. I’d love to read the original version, as often things get lost in translation, but I’m afraid my Japanese isn’t good enough to read a book. I can understand Japanese TV, but reading/writing is harder for me. The English version is quite recent. I hope your partner and friends enjoy it as much as we have – it’s a great little story, isn’t it!

I actually read this book in Japanese & didn’t realise that we could get one in English (English version has the more interesting cover!) Now I can introduce this book to my partner & friends to read. Win Win!

Dear Shauna,
Thanks for your comment. Yes, it is really a terrible thing that behaviours of just a few ‘dodgy’ doctors has caused society to lose faith in certain specialties. Given the sensitive nature of O&G, that trust issue is magnified when it comes to male obstetricians/gynaecologists, and the article has only propagated this fear. I do feel sorry for any male O&G specialists who feel that they now have to prove their intentions because of this article, which I think did more harm than good. I was glad to see that most of the comments on the online article were dismissive of Nikki Gemelli’s thoughts.

Hi Jane,
Thanks for your comment. I haven’t heard back from her, but judging by the large number of tweets and comments she’s receiving, I’m guessing that she is inundated. I don’t have any opinion of her as a fiction writer, as I’ve never had any interest in her books, but I certainly hope that she will step down as a writer for a newspaper like The Australian, because she is not a proper ‘journalist’ – agree with you on that! Hi Cheryl,
Thanks for your comment. You’re so right – patients just need care, and the public don’t know the difference between the doctors (whether they’re accredited or not, their number of PGY, designation, etc). Some demonstrable and measurable changes would be good, otherwise it’s just ‘lip service’. I think things are slowly changing, and I’m glad to see that the media are paying attention to this important issue for us! Miko

Hello,
I’m so sorry to hear of your experience. I too had bad experiences at St George Hospital and wish that I had spoken up at the time because I’ve since heard of awful things happening in the department I was allocated to at the time. I too feared that reporting would have repercussions for me before my career even began (I was still a third year medical student at the time). I hope things will get better for you. Miko
